Reddit user MIR1508 tangled in a dilemma with her ex-boyfriend over their beloved dog, Luna. Luna, a 16-year-old Dalmatian, became the center of a dispute between them. After their breakup, they agreed to share Luna’s expenses, with the dog residing primarily with OP’s ex due to his spacious home and yard.
Recently, Luna fell ill, requiring costly and painful treatment, promising only a few more months of life. The vet suggested euthanasia as an alternative. OP leaned toward mercy, advocating for Luna’s peaceful passing, while her ex insisted on pursuing treatment, hoping for a miraculous recovery.
This disagreement led to a heated argument, resulting in OP refusing a financial contribution to the treatment, causing her ex to shoulder the expense alone. Now, barred from seeing Luna, OP wonders if her stance was justified.

1. Let’s find out.
2. When OP and her boyfriend broke up, the couple mutually decided to share the case expenses of their dog, Luna.
3. Luna lives with OP’s ex because he has a bugger house and stays with her whenever he has to go away for work or vacation.
4. Luna is way past her breed’s average age and has begun her journey to the end, but her ex has been ignoring this reality.
5. It seems like Luna has some autoimmune disease.
6. The doctor said the medication would extend her life for a few months but at the cost of terrible pain. So he suggested they put Luna down.
7. The treatment would also be very expensive so he wanted OP and her ex to consider all options before making any decision.
8. OP thinks going for the treatment would be unfair to Luna, but the ex wants to explore every last option.
9. OP told him she won’t be a part of the process and would not pay for the treatment.
10. OP told her ex she would be happy to spend all her money on Luna if the outcome was certain.
11. The ex decided to go on with the treatment alone and there has been zero progress.
12. OP is not allowed to meet Luna now. She took the matter to the courts of the AITA community to ask if not paying for Luna’s treatment made her an AH or not.
Here’s what the AITA community had to say about this:
13. It would be better to put the dog out of her misery than give it more pain.
14. Although the two had decided to divide all vet bills, he should understand that making OP pay half for the treatment they don’t know would even work is unfair.
15. It is in the dog’s best interest to put it down. Don’t have her suffer more.
16. Part of me thinks he can’t be blamed for this attitude.
