The full-frontal scene sparked quite a buzz on social media.
The Game of Thrones universe has always been known for its explicit content. It didn’t earn the nickname “tits and dragons” for nothing.
The spin-off series, House of the Dragon, appears committed to maintaining that reputation - only this time, it’s the men who are baring it all.
In season two, episode three, viewers are presented with a scene set in one of King’s Landing’s numerous brothels.
For long-time Game of Thrones fans, this setting is quite familiar.
In this episode, Aegon Targaryen, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, enters a brothel with his squires.
Unexpectedly, they come across Aegon’s brother, Aemond Targaryen, who is involved in a sexual encounter with a prostitute.
The situation takes a surprising twist when Aegon begins to mock Aemond about his choice of woman.
This playful interaction prompts Aemond to abruptly stand up and walk out of the room completely naked, his erect penis fully visible.
While nudity is common in both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, it’s typically the side characters who are shown fully naked.
A lot of fans were surprised by such a bold portrayal of male nudity on a mainstream TV show.
One viewer shared their shock on social media, commenting, “I did not expect that Aemond brothel scene,” along with a gif of a woman closing her laptop in disbelief.
Another commenter joined in, stating, “Nothing could have prepared me for the scene at the brothel with Vhagar on full display” referring to Aemond’s dragon, coincidentally the largest in the series.
A third person added, “Should have put a trigger warning on Aemond brothel scene got me shocked on his dangling keychain.”
After viewers processed the initial surprise of seeing Aemond completely naked and at full attention, speculation arose about whether the appendage was prosthetic.
While it has not been officially confirmed whether actor Ewan Mitchell used a prosthetic or a body double, it seems the goal was indeed to surprise the audience.
“It wasn’t a choice we made lightly. But it’s true to Aemond that he shocks the audience.”
Weakness is not part of Aemond’s vocabulary," Mitchell revealed in an interview with Vulture.
Going into more detail about the episode in an interview with Variety, director Geeta Vasant Patel explained that she and Ewan had both agreed that portraying Aemond fully naked in the scene was consistent with his character.
“What we came to is that Aemond was hurt. He was bullied when he was little. Since he was hurt, he had created this persona that was the exact opposite of how he was feeling.
“He created the persona of someone who is callous and has no regard for what others think of him,” Patel explained.
She continued, “Slowly he starts putting on his armor and when he stands up, the fact that he doesn’t care that you see his penis is such a strong visceral shift.
And naturally, Ewan was like, ‘I want to be fully nude in that moment. It’s important to me because that’s who my character is. That’s what he would do.’ And that’s what we did.”
