With the holiday season just around the corner, the beloved “Grinch” movie, now in its 23rd year, has stirred up talks about a potential sequel featuring Jim Carrey. While official confirmation is still pending, fans eagerly anticipate news from both Carrey and Universal Pictures.
As we count down the weeks to Christmas, households are already adorning their spaces with festive decorations. And what better way to embrace the holiday spirit than by revisiting classic Christmas films as December draws near?
“The Grinch,” or officially titled “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” stands out as one of the most cherished holiday classics. Released back in 2000 and directed by Ron Howard, this film is celebrating its 23rd Christmas season.
If that fact doesn’t make you feel a tad older, I’m not sure what will!
When “The Grinch,” featuring Jim Carrey as the mischievous green character, first hit screens, it received mixed reviews. However, over time, it has transformed into a beloved holiday tradition.
While no sequel has emerged thus far, rumors earlier this year hinted that we might not have to wait too many more Christmases for more Grinch antics.
Giant Freakin Robot reported that Carrey is set to reprise his role as The Grinch in an upcoming sequel.
The publication shared: “Jim Carrey is returning to Universal Pictures for The Grinch 2, once again playing Dr. Seuss’s most famous and ill-tempered creation.”
The February 2023 report remained silent on any plot details for The Grinch sequel or the possibility of reuniting with other stars from the 2000 film.
It’s worth noting that, since these rumors initially emerged, neither Carrey nor Universal Pictures have addressed them.
Given Carrey’s historical reluctance towards sequels, fans might be somewhat taken aback if he indeed reprises his role for The Grinch 2.
In a 2017 interview with CinemaBlend, the actor expressed: “I find sequels are a function of commerce for the most part. At least the two I’ve done, they were characters I enjoyed doing, but I did find myself almost parroting myself at that point.”
“When you put 10 years between you and the last time you did it, suddenly you’re going, ‘How did I do that again?’… So, you’re imitating your original inspiration. It was super fun with Jeff, but I’m not a crazy sequel guy.”
Carrey is unquestionably more selective about his roles nowadays, so taking on the role of the Grinch again might not be his foremost concern.
In a 2022 interview with Empire, Carrey described his involvement in the Christmas movie as a “challenge.”
“It was all just: a challenge,” he said. " And at a certain point, it got past that, and hopefully from everything that everyone is telling me, it got to the point where you saw the Grinch’s soul."
Following the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in April last year, the actor known for The Mask made a significant announcement, expressing his intention to “retire” from acting. He explained that he believed he had “done enough.”
This decision coincided with Jim’s advertisement of his nearly three-decade-old Los Angeles property, affectionately referred to as his “sanctuary,” for a remarkable $28.9 million earlier this year.
After acquiring the luxurious mansion back in 1994, the 61-year-old Golden Globe winner shared with The New York Post that he was ready for “life changes.”
