A man who served as a private investigator during the defamation trial between Amber Heard and Johnny Depp has shared details from the testimonies he collected during his investigation.
Paul Barresi claims he was hired by Amber Heard’s legal team to uncover evidence against Johnny Depp throughout the widely publicized trial.
The lawsuit originated from an op-ed by Heard in the Washington Post, where she described her experiences with domestic abuse.
Although Depp was not explicitly named, he was implied strongly enough to initiate a defamation lawsuit against Heard.
In response, Heard counter-sued Depp, seeking $100 million, drawing massive media coverage.
The jury ultimately sided with both Depp’s initial lawsuit and Heard’s counterclaim, awarding Depp $10.35 million and Heard $2 million in damages.
By the end of 2022, all legal proceedings related to the trial were reportedly settled.
Paul Barresi has now disclosed several findings from his time working for Heard’s lawyers in his self-published book.
In his book, 74-year-old Paul Barresi disclosed that he was tasked with finding evidence that would negatively portray Johnny Depp.
The book contains claims and quotes describing Depp as a “gentleman’s gentleman” who did not possess “a mean bone in his body”.
Barresi recounts that when he spoke to Depp’s friends, they portrayed the actor as someone who holds “respect and adoration for women”.
Hired by Amber Heard’s legal team in 2019, Barresi did not specify which of Depp’s defamation trials he was involved in.
He wrote, “Through this journey, I aimed to honor our shared humanity, shedding light on the man behind the myths and offering a narrative grounded in genuine understanding and compassion.”
Following the 2022 trial, Depp stated on Instagram: “Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”
Heard expressed her disappointment, saying, “The disappointment I feel today is beyond words. I’m heartbroken that the mountain of evidence still was not enough to stand up to the disproportionate power, influence, and sway of my ex-husband.”
