Netflix subscribers are having a hard time holding back their tears after viewing what they’re calling the ‘saddest movie ever’.

There’s an unmistakable comfort in settling down on the sofa with a bowl of ice cream and a deeply moving film that allows for a good cry.

A drama on Netflix has recently stolen the hearts of its audience, being dubbed the ‘saddest movie’ ever seen.

“Can You See Us?” is creating a buzz and is recommended for those in search of a deeply emotional experience.

The film, directed by Kenny Mumba from Zambia and written by Andrew and Lawrence Thompson, is rated 15 and tells the story of a young Zambian boy with albinism. Thabo Kaamba plays the child version of the character, while George Sikazwe takes on the role of the young adult.

Right from the start, he is met with rejection from his own father.

The movie traces his journey from a difficult childhood filled with constant bullying and devastating loss, to moments of fragile optimism.

The opening credits of “Can You See Us?” mention that the movie is inspired by the real-life story of John Chiti, a well-known Zambian singer who also has albinism.

Chiti’s real-life experiences and his extraordinary life seem to have played a role in shaping the film’s story, with him being recognized as an ‘additional writer’ for the film.

During a revealing 2020 conversation with the Thomas Reuters Foundation, John Chiti opened up about his challenging upbringing, stating, “When I was born, my family was confused. They couldn’t believe that I belonged, and this led to the divorce of my parents.”

To combat the stigma he endured, Chiti established the Albino Foundation of Zambia in 2008, dedicated to increasing awareness and fostering acceptance.

He shared his personal reflections, saying, “I used to blame myself for being a person with albinism. I grew up with low self-esteem because I thought I’m not human enough.”

“But it’s not us that have to change; it’s society that needs to change its attitudes towards us.”

Netflix characterizes Can You See Us? as ‘bittersweet, dark, and emotional’.

The film has profoundly resonated with its viewers, with one Netflix subscriber commenting, “Haven’t cried this much in a while; this was an amazing movie.”

A significant number of viewers admitted to becoming emotional, with some revealing they cried ‘from the beginning to the end’.

One viewer noted, “The saddest film, but a real eye-opener too; it’s horrific that an innocent child can endure so much hatred. Broke my heart.”
