The streaming platform has established itself as a leader in television, particularly with its exceptional range of horror shows.
Titles like The Fall of the House of Usher and Marianne offer plenty of terrifying options for horror enthusiasts.
Yet, there’s one spine-chilling series that has managed to stay largely unnoticed—until now.
On social media, fans are commending the show, with comments like: “Saw this when it first came out, best series I’ve seen in a long time.”
Another viewer adds: “Such a good show, I watched it twice. Everything about it is perfect.”
“I binge-watched it and I’ll do it again,” comments a third.
Someone else pens: “Man this is really good. It’s beautifully shot, well-directed and written. It’s a great show.”
While a fifth viewer shares: “Easily one of my favourite horrors. It’s an awesome series [and] a must-watch.”
Created by Mike Flanagan, known for works like The Haunting of Hill House and The Midnight Club, this series is stirring interest.
It features Zach Gilford and includes regular Flanagan collaborators such as Samantha Sloyan, Rahul Kohli, and Kate Siegel, who is also Flanagan’s real-life spouse.
The plot revolves around a young man who returns to his hometown on Crockett Island, aiming to rebuild his life after spending four years in prison for a fatal drunk-driving accident.
“He arrives at the same time as a mysterious, charismatic young priest who begins to revitalise the town’s flagging faith,” the synopsis reads.
“However, the community’s divisions are soon exacerbated by the priest’s deeds while mysterious events befall the small town.”
After its release was delayed by the Covid pandemic, the series debuted in 2021 and received critical acclaim, boasting an impressive 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview with Collider, Flanagan described the series as his most personal work to date, using it as a ‘cathartic’ way to address his own struggles with sobriety.
Flanagan also opened up about spending much of his life in ‘complete denial’ about his ‘issue with alcohol’.
He told the publication: “It was also incredibly cathartic because this was a chance to give voice to where I was, in a number of steps along the way.”
“The show opens with an anxiety that I think represented my biggest fear about my alcoholism, which wasn’t that I would ruin my marriage, or my children, or my career, or my friendships, all of which I was absolutely worried about.”
“It wasn’t that I would die in a horrible drunk driving accident. It was that I would kill someone else and live. That was the worst fear. That was the nightmare scenario.”
Wondering what the binge-worthy show is?
The answer is Midnight Mass, a critically acclaimed series created by Flanagan, with all seven episodes available for streaming on Netflix now.
