When entrusted with the care of someone else’s pet, it’s crucial to prioritize following the owner’s instructions, no matter how short or long they may be. Each instruction is typically included for a reason. You also have to keep in mind one thing you can never know their pet better than they do.
However, in a recent post on r/AITA, a Redditor found herself in a predicament when she chose to deviate from one of the pet owner’s instructions. In the story, the OP described their sister as someone who treats her cat like her own child. When the sister had to go on a business trip, the OP convinced her to let them be the pet sitter.
While caring for the cat, the OP discovered that the pet food provided by the sister didn’t contain any meat, consistent with the sister’s vegan lifestyle. Despite this, the OP decided to feed the cat chicken throughout the week they were pet sitting, believing it was a better option. However, upon the sister’s return, she discovered that the cat had been fed chicken, to which she revealed the cat was allergic. The sister was understandably upset and had to take the cat to the vet. While the OP feels guilty about the situation, they believe it could have been avoided if the sister had communicated the cat’s allergy beforehand.
1. OP defied her sister’s instructions and gave chicken to her cat.
2. OP’s sister treats her cat just like her child so when she was going on a business trip OP convinced her sister that she would pet sit her cat as OP needed money.
3. OP’s sister has just two important things in her life…her cat and vegan diet.
4. While feeding the cat OP noticed that her food didn’t contain meat, which irked OP as she thought that her sister was forcing veganism on the cat so OP fed the cat some chicken.
5. When OP’s sister came back she was severely crossed with OP as her cat was having some sort of allergic reaction. Upon telling her sister about feeding chicken to the cat, she discovered that her sister’s cat was allergic to chicken.
6. Although the OP felt guilty for not following her sister’s instructions and for the cat’s situation, she insists that if her sister had told her about the cat’s allergies all this chaos would have never occurred.
7. So now OP’s sister is not paying her for the pet sit but also wants OP to pay the vet bills as all this is her fault.
8. You should have fed the cat what was given by its owner as its food.
9. Before assuming about the cat food, you should’ve asked. You’re responsible for the vet bills, so deal with it.
10. A war broke out in the thread between cats and dogs being obligate carnivores or omnivores.
11. A lot of cat food brands use fancy or scientific names instead of meat.
12. Her sister can’t be lying, the cat is having an allergic reaction.
13. OP made the mistake because she believed that her sister was forcing her vegan norms on the cat.
14. Op’s sister quickly knew what was the problem…she wasn’t faking the allergy thing.
15. If the cat is allergic to chicken, doesn’t mean it can’t eat other meats.
16. Through the post we have no idea whether the cat was on a vegan diet or not.
17. If OP thought there was some problem with the cat’s food, she should have talked with her sister instead of intervening on her own.
18. OP’s mistake could have been proven lethal for the cat if timely medical interventions were not given to it.
19. Sounds like the cat was on a specialised diet.
20. OP is lucky the cat only had a minor allergic reaction instead of any catastrophic one.
