Who is Travis Kalanick?

In 2009, he co-founded and served as CEO of the ride-hailing app company Uber, which provided transportation by enabling users to page freelance drivers of privately owned vehicles via smartphones. Kalanick was born on August 6, 1976, in Los Angeles, California, and raised his family in the United States.

Early Life

Kalanick grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles, where he currently resides. The computer had piqued his interest from an early age, and he had learned how to write computer code by the time he reached middle school.

While pursuing a degree in computer engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he left to assist in the formation of the start-up business Scour, Inc., which he co-founded with several of his UCLA classmates.

Founded in 1995, Scour was one of the first dot-com companies to allow users to share movies and music over the internet. The company provided an Internet search engine as well as file-sharing services.

Despite the fact that its services soon gained popularity, the firm was sued for copyright infringement by both the music and motion-picture industries, respectively. Scour finally filed for bankruptcy in 2000 and later auctioned off all of its assets to satisfy creditors.

By 2001, Kalanick had recovered from his bankruptcy by establishing Red Swoosh, a company that specialized in file-sharing technologies and was acquired by Google. Red Swoosh gained a number of high-profile corporate clients, and Kalanick was able to sell the company for almost $19 million to Akamai Technologies in 2007.

After that, he worked as an “angel investor” (financing promising start-ups) before co-founding Uber with Garrett Camp in 2009. Uber was based in San Francisco at the time of its founding. From a small beginning with only three cars available for hire, the company quickly grew into a global behemoth, expanding into various international countries by 2012.

Uber was operational in 66 countries and more than 360 cities around the world three years later. During the course of the company’s growth, Kalanick earned a reputation for being both aggressive and belligerent.

Careers during the life of Travis Kalanick

Throughout his professional life, Kalanick has faced the most difficult of obstacles. His entrepreneurial experience began when he founded Scour, a start-up that specializes in online search engines and file-sharing services, as his first business venture. Unfortunately, the company was hit with significant infringement and copyright accusations by motion picture industries who filed a lawsuit against Scour. This case compelled Kalanick to file for bankruptcy in 2000, and he also sold his assets as a result of the proceedings.

When he started Red Swoosh in 2001, Kalanick was able to get out of bankruptcy (a file-sharing technology.) In 2007, he sold this company for a stunning $19 million to Akamai Technologies, which he founded.

Uber was founded by him in 2009, and its popularity has grown exponentially since then. However, despite its success, this business was not without its difficulties. Taxicab drivers from all around the world took to the streets to demonstrate their opposition to unfair market competition.
