Taika Waititi is a name you’ll hear a lot in the entertainment news these days, and with good reason: he’s swiftly rising to become one of the most well-known directors working today, with a slew of critically acclaimed films already under his belt.
A couple of years ago, he co-created the FX comedic television series “Reservation Dogs,” which was recently renewed for a second season.
Reservation Dogs is a television series that centers on four Indigenous teenagers named Elora Danan Postoak (played by Devery Jacobs), Bear Smallhill (played by D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai), Cheese (played by Lane Factor), and Willie Jack (played by Paulina Alexis), who live on a reservation in rural Oklahoma and refer to themselves as the Rez Dogs.
The Rez Dogs do whatever they think is required to gather money for a cross-country move to get away from their current living circumstances, and they get themselves into quite a bit of trouble in the process.
“Reservation Dogs” Season 1 concludes with the kids have learned a great deal about life and even more about themselves — but there are still many questions that need to be answered in season 2. Until further notice, the following is what we know about the upcoming season of “Reservation Dogs.”
What is the release date of Reservation Dogs Season 2?
The show “Reservation Dogs” got renewed for a second season in early September, with the new season expected to broadcast somewhere in 2022. The new series was initially suggested in 2019 by Taika Waititi, who shared the news on Twitter.
The first season is set to broadcast in August 2021, with the second season following in 2022. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait nearly as long for Season 2, but we still have some time before the show’s return — and we wouldn’t be surprised if the launch date is announced as early as next summer.
The show’s season renewal was reported by TVLine, which included a statement from FX’s president of original programming, Nick Grad: “Our excitement at the prospect of introducing Reservation Dogs to the public is matched only by our delight that they seem to enjoy it just as much as we do.
We’re delighted to place an order for another season ahead of schedule. As a result of his collaboration with Taika Waititi and the rest of the creative team, as well as with the brilliant cast and crew, Sterlin Harjo was able to deliver on his creative vision, resulting in one of television’s best new comedies and a groundbreaking showcase of representation and raw talent.”
Who will be in Reservation Dogs Season 2?
While there hasn’t been an official announcement about the Season 2 cast, the four main characters from the first season, Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack, are expected to return. As well as series regulars such as Bear’s mother Rita (Sarah Podemski), Officer Big (Zahn McClarnon), Mose (Lil Mike), Mekko (Funny Bone), and William “Spirit” Knifeman, we’ll probably see a few new characters (Dallas Goldtooth). We may meet some new characters, so keep an eye out for any formal casting announcements.
“Reservation Dogs” is setting new standards in the entertainment business as the first television series to feature majority-Indigenous writing, directing, and producing team, as well as a majority-Indigenous cast and crew (per Salon).
Harjo also talked about how they went about finding cast members who could truly reflect people from Indigenous-American backgrounds during the first casting process. For him, finding the actors entails traveling to these places, as reported by the magazine Salon.
“That was all [the ‘Reservation Dogs’] accomplished. We walked around to the several settlements and cast our votes. We traveled around the country collecting tapes from various indigenous populations. There is a lot of potentials. It just so happens that it isn’t located on Hollywood Boulevard.”

What will happen in Reservation Dogs Season 2?
Elora, Bear, Cheese, and Willie Jack find themselves at a fork in the path after Season 1 of “Reservation Dogs.” Willie Jack admits she doesn’t want to go to California after all, which drives the other members of the group to dispute their plans — particularly Elora and Bear — and ultimately leads to their demise.
The Rez Dogs’ commander, Jackie (Elva Guerra), eventually convinces Elora to join her in California, where she meets the leader of their gang’s rival gang, which leads to an even greater breach between the two groups in Season 2.
Punkin Lusty (Sten Joddi), Bear’s estranged father, could also make a reappearance in the series. In an interview with TVLine, Woon-A-Tai shared his thoughts on the possibility of his character hearing from his father in the upcoming season: “I think it’s great that he might hear from his father.” “I am confident that we will succeed.
Do I believe Punkin will make a trip to Oklahoma City? No, I don’t believe that is the case. If (and this is a big “if”) the Reservation Dogs decide to travel to California, I’m not even sure if Bear will be interested in visiting his father at that time.
Will Punkin be able to redeem himself in subsequent episodes? That is something I can imagine. So, I have no idea what the authors are going to do with it!” However, it is unclear whether or not Joddi would return to the project in the future.
Even though the plot of “Reservation Dogs” Season 2 hasn’t been revealed, we expect it to be filled with plenty of jokes and heartwarming moments, much like Season 1.
