Project Windless – A Fantasy Game From PUBG’s Publisher

Krafton, the firm that has acquired the rights to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is developing a new game based on the popular Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears, which is now in development.

While there isn’t much information available about how the game will appear, Krafton has sought the services of a Hollywood concept artist to help them create a style and atmosphere for the game.

Project Windless

Project Windless is the name given to Krafton’s intentions for The Bird That Drinks Tears, which go beyond the creation of a single game to the development of a “larger multimedia franchise” based on intellectual property.

A distinctively Korean fantasy world is the setting for the novels, which is populated by mythological creatures such as dokkaebi (also known as “Korean goblin” or “Nature Spirit”), naga, and ssireum, a traditional Korean wrestling style taught to the characters.

Iain McCaig, a concept artist who has worked on Star Wars characters as well as other popular properties such as Harry Potter and The Avengers, is collaborating with Krafton to bring novelist Yeong-do Lee’s universe to life.

One of the earliest pieces of art depicts a wooden structure perched atop a stone tor high above the desert, with a lengthy platform extending on one side.

There are two possibilities for this structure: a lifting point where goods are winched up from below, or a dock for flying creatures or airships.

However, it is an interesting image, with some old, ripped flags hoisted on poles in the sand in the front and wind blowing across the large expanse of desert sand that blankets the area behind them.

McCaig describes himself as “honored” to have contributed to the visualization of Lee’s characters and the world, as well as to bringing the novels to the notice of a global audience.

While PUBG has always had a strong connection to the present day, some of Krafton’s other games are far more fantasy-oriented: there’s the free-to-play MMORPG Tera, as well as the RPG Mistover, which has a distinct anime Darkest Dungeon aesthetic.

Although there is no official release date for Project Windless as of yet, our list of the greatest battle royale games may be of assistance in passing the time until we learn more about what Krafton has in store.
