To replace potentially unsafe Takata airbaginflators, General Motors(GM) will recall about 7 million large pickup trucks and Sports Utility Vehicles(SUVs) worldwide. The news came on Monday after the US government notified the auto manufacturer that 6 million units had to be recalled domestically. It has all happened after a U.S. intelligence agency said Monday it had denied the offer of the Detroit automaker to prevent the callback. It is estimated that the recall would cost the Detroit automaker $1.2 billion.
Why recall of GM’s vehicles is important?
GM would recall 5.9 million 2007-2014 model year trucks and SUVs because inflators are all at risk of the very same type of explosion after long-term exposure to high heat and humidity as other recalled Takata inflators, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said. The statement came on Monday after the US government notified the automaker that 6 million vehicles had to be recalled nationally.
Since 2016, the automaker has requested the regulator four times to avoid recalls, arguing that the airbag inflatorcontainers were safe at all times and in the examination. On Monday, however, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) refused the requests, saying the inflators are still at the possibility of bursting. Owners protested to the NHTSA that profits were put above protection by the firm.

Takata bag inflator has a history of threat
In total, 18 U.S. casualties, but none of those involved GM cars, have been recorded connected to Takata airbaginflators. Fifteen U.S. deaths in Honda vehicles have been registered to date, two in Ford Motor Co vehicles and one in a BMW since 2009.
What GM said about the issue?
GM claims the 5.9 million vehicles with Takata inflators are different from other vehicles. The automaker reports that 66,894 Takata airbagpassenger inflators have been deployed without a recorded rupture in the vehicles under study.
The decision “proves that GM Takata inflators are neither unique nor special,” said Peter Prieto, an attorney representing consumers in Takata litigation. GM inflators are at the same risk as all other Takata inflators of bursting and seriously injuring vehicle occupants.
