Scarlett Johansson recounted a particularly awkward moment involving an orgasm scene with Joaquin Phoenix during a movie shoot.
This wasn’t a scene from a risqué Scarlett Johansson movie that you missed—no such film exists, at least not publicly.
Rather, Johansson was discussing a sequence filmed with Joaquin Phoenix for Spike Jonze’s 2013 sci-fi romantic comedy, Her.
For those unfamiliar, Her centers around Phoenix’s character, Theodore, who falls in love with an AI program named Samantha, voiced by Johansson.
Interestingly, Johansson doesn’t appear physically in the movie; her interaction with Phoenix is purely vocal, through the character’s device.
While speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast in 2022 with hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, Johansson opened up about filming a peculiar sex scene for the movie.
The scene is essentially a simulated phone sex interaction.
Johansson described the shooting process as more uncomfortable than one might expect.
Phoenix had completed his portion of the scene on set and needed to be present in the recording studio for Johansson’s part, which involved only her voice.
She detailed the experience: “Joaquin comes in, we try to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it.”
“He was angry… He had already done [the scene], he had done it in person, and now he was with me, in this weird theater, I’m in this box and [Joaquin] is staring at me, the lights are low, and like, Spike is there. It was so bizarre.”
“Joaquin was so upset about it, he left the studio. He needed a break.”
Johansson expressed understanding for her co-star’s discomfort, admitting that reflecting on the moment now induces ‘panic’ in her.
She explained further: “You don’t want to hear your voice, ever.”
“You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having an orgasm. You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having a fake orgasm – ew. It’s so gross.”
