When Paul adopted Skatty he had no idea he just gained a lifelong buddy and sailing companion. But let’s rewind from the beginning of the story!
Skatty was two months old when Paul took him home from the shelter. He’s an adorable ginger Maine Coon cat with an extra pair of thumbs!
Paul is a devoted sailor who spends most of his time sailing on his boat ‘La Chica’. At the time he had an idea and wasn’t sure if it would work out.
He decided to take Skatty with him for his next sailing trip, hoping his new rescue kitty would share the love for the ocean just as he does.
It was a bit of a challenge the first time around, as Paul mentioned in an interview:
“It was a bit awkward to try and sail a boat with a young kitten who is determined to sit on your lap, but we managed. Once the sails were up, he relaxed somewhat but still wanted to be with me.”
From that day on, Skatty joined his dad Paul on every sailing trip making the perfect co-sailor ever!
Now comes the twist in the story that will warm your heart up and make you love cats even more!
Skatty’s dad Paul is deaf, and this sweet ginger feline quickly figured out how to be the ears for his dad!
Without any training, Skatty learned how to help his dad overcome his hearing disability. Through his body language, he would inform Paul about an incoming boat or if his phone was ringing.
He would gently put his paw on Paul’s leg, letting him know something was going on.
When he’s not on the boat Skatty is like any other cat. He enjoys cuddling with his dad, chasing bugs in the backyard, and basking in the sunshine.
Paul and Skatty have an incredible bond and they share an amazing adventurous life. Skatty joins his dad on the boat to this day. As Paul beautifully said:
“He chose to join me in the cockpit, which he does to this day.”
