Alaloth – Champions of The Four Kingdoms – Everything We Know So Far

Alaloth: Champions of the Four Kingdoms has been available on Steam for quite some time, but you may have only recently been aware of it because the isometric action RPG was briefly showcased at the PC Gaming Show this past weekend, along with a new trailer for the game.

While it appears to be another return to the Infinity Engine RPGs of old, Alaloth has more in common with Diablo than it does with its predecessors — and it is unquestionably marching to the beat of its own drum.

Alaloth – Champions of The Four Kingdoms Trailer

In the clip, it’s clear that Alaloth is inspired by classic games from the Infinity Engine, such as Pillars of Eternity. Not only that but the character designs and settings are evocative of the wilder fantasy films from the 1970s and 1980s.

There are no ridiculously huge pauldrons or a riot of brilliant colors to be found; instead, the clothing and spell effects have a restrained appearance, almost as if they were recorded on videotape or a digital camera.

However, it is in a battle that Alaloth appears to stand out the most from its action RPG contemporaries.

In games such as Diablo, Torchlight, and Path of Exile, players become accustomed to dealing with hordes of opponents at a time, mowing them down with powerful area-of-effect spells and abilities, as well as supercharged weapons, to achieve victory.

Alaloth – Champions of The Four Kingdoms Gameplay

Battles in Alaloth are mostly based on melee combat, which is far more hard and entertaining than I’m accustomed to seeing.

When you’re not evading or hunting for potential opportunities for ripostes, you’re casting spells in an attempt to catch an adversary at a particularly vulnerable moment.

If you put one foot in front of the other, death will approach quickly. As in real life, even ordinary weaponry can take a large amount of health away from both you and your opponents.

As in gaming, the goal of going into a fight is to avoid being struck at all costs.

Alaloth – Champions of The Four Kingdoms Story

The god Alaloth is depicted as rebelling against his fellow gods and descending to the mortal realms — a world divided into four kingdoms arrayed around a central valley where Alaloth lies imprisoned but capable of spreading his evil over the countries – in the backstory.

This game puts you in control of your character’s ability to journey to Alaloth’s jail and vanquish him. The scenario was written in partnership with Chris Avellone, who is well-known for his work on the classic game Diablo (who has also contributed writing to Dying Light 2 recently).

Final Words

However, Alaloth appears to be the studio’s most ambitious effort to date, despite the fact that Gamera Interactive has previously released a very diverse spectrum of retro-inspired games.

It’s slated to be released sometime this year, and you can put it on your Steam wishlist right now to stay up to date on the newest updates.
