It goes without saying that the world is full of endless mysteries – from seemingly impossible man-made wonders to the quirks of nature. Let’s take a look at some of the most mysterious of them all.
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
The Giza pyramid complex consists of the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and, of course, the Great Pyramid of Giza – the only one of the seven wonders of the world still standing today – as well as the Great Sphinx. The ancient Egyptians continue to fascinate people even to this day. In the modern era, many elements are inspired by the mystical themes of ancient Egypt, particularly games like online slots, with Ghost of Dead, Doom of Dead, Scroll of Dead, and Pilgrim Dead drawing on the sometimes spooky ancient beliefs of the afterlife and eternity.
The ancient Egyptians built these pyramids to house the mortal bodies of those past, surrounding them with amulets, treasures, scrolls, and other artifacts to help them in the afterlife. One of the most baffling things about the pyramids, though, is how they came to be – especially as similar structures can be seen throughout the world, though there is no evidence these ancient empires ever interacted. With the Great Pyramid standing at 455 feet tall, the building of such a structure would be a feat even with modern building methods, which begs the question how the pyramids could be built with ancient tools and no machinery, and to such a high degree that it still stands thousands of years later…
Lake Hillier, Australia
Perhaps one of the most unique elements of nature can be found in Western Australia. Lake Hillier is a saline body of water, spanning 2,000 feet by 820 feet. First recorded in 1802, this lake has become well known due to its vibrant pink color. As it sits right next to the turquoise water of the ocean, the contrast between the hue of the waters is even more stark.
But, ‘why is the water pink?’, you might ask. The short answer – we don’t know! The water stays pink even when drawn into a container. Scientists have theorized that the most probable cause of the color is either bacteria, algae, or a chemical reaction in the water. Nevertheless, the mysteriousness of this lake adds to the mystical nature, making this a truly unique sight to behold.
Eternal Flame Falls, New York, USA
Within Chestnut Ridge Park in Western New York, you’ll find the Shale Creek Preserve. Following the path to Shale Creek, one of the USA’s most mysterious attractions awaits – Eternal Flame Falls. This small waterfall’s waters tumble over a grotto at the bottom of the falls – and, this grotto is on fire most of the year round. But, how could this be? Water extinguishes fire, right?
Well, geologists have found that methane gas seeps through gaps in the rock in the grotto, with higher-than-normal concentrations of ethane and propane, which fuels the fire continuously. In fact, it is estimated that the grotto emits one kilogram of methane every day! That said, it is unknown how the gas was first set alight, or why, keeping the mysteriousness of this fairytale setting alive.
And there you have it – just a few of the world’s most mysterious places. Whether you visit them in person or simply look into their fascinating origins, these mystical locations are truly magical.
