A friend of Martin’s went to check on him at his home in the 6300 block of Douglas Avenue and found no response. Police responded at 12:30 a.m. and Martin, 60, was pronounced dead. His cause of death has not been specified but the police say that no criminal activity has been suspected.
The announcement of the news
During a 1 p.m. broadcast on The Eagle, several members of the show paused their programming to announce his death. He was a friend and a mentor. Through various emotional tributes, the group remembered Martin’s life – all the struggles and the achievements. They also said that they will find a way to properly honor the legend.
Following the broadcast, Dan O’Malley said that the news of the demise of the iconic radio host was shocking but not unexpected for those who were close to Martin. Russ has been dealing with a lot of health issues over the last few years. But it was sad that he is gone and he will be thoroughly missed.
His legendary career on the Radio
During Martin’s prime, there was no one better at the radio. He was very polarizing. So, in spite of personal opinions, everyone knew about him. Everyone had an opinion about him. And he was not afraid either. He gave his unabashed opinions on things and that was what made him successful.
A post on The Eagle’s Facebook page asked fans to share their favorite memories of Martin. Martin was taken off air in 2008 when his old station switched to sports. He then again returned to radio in 2010. Martin was also arrested on a charge of domestic abuse against his girlfriend.
His foundation, “The Russ Martin Show Listeners Foundation”, which supports the families of police officers and firefighters who have died in the line of duty, will continue its work and show will the show.
