After losing Border Gavaskar Trophy to India recently, everyone was expecting Australian team to perform better in T20 Series against New Zealand. However, much to the disappointment of Australian fans, the team once again suffered humiliation as New Zealand crushed Australia by 53 runs and has taken 1-0 lead in the 5-match T20 Series. Earlier in the day, Australian skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and invited the home team to bat first. After losing bunch of wickets in the first few overs, Kiwi team managed to get to 184/5, thanks to the heroic knock of Devon Conway who fell just one short of a deserving century and remained not out on 99. Chasing the target, Australian team was knocked out for 131 runs. Conway was adjudged Man of the Match for his terrific innings.
NZ batsman Devon Conway missed a much deserving century, remained unbeaten on 99
Talking about the NZ batting, Devon Conway was the star batsman today. At one time when the home team was struggling at 19/3, Conway absorbed the pressure and kept on ticking the scoreboard. He was well supported by Glenn Phillips and Neesham who contributed 30 and 26 runs in quick time. Unfortunately, Conway missed the century and remained unbeaten on 99. In his 59-ball knock, Conway smashed 10 fours and 3 sixes, helping NZ to post a target of 185 runs for the visitors. Daniel Sams and Jhye Richardson took 2-2 wickets each.
Australia’s batting order failed miserably, off-spinner Ish Sodhi claimed 4 wickets
In response to the target, Australia’s top order failed badly and the team kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. Apart from Mitchell Marsh 33 -ball 45 knock, no other batsman showed any determination. Glen Maxell, who recently made headlines by getting big money in IPL auction, one again failed miserably and got playing a loose shot after making just 1 run. Off Spinner Ish Sodhi was the quick of the bowler taking 4 wickets and giving away just 28 runs in his 4-over spell. Pacers Tim Southee and Trent Boult took 2 wickets each and eventually Australian team got all-out for just 131 runs. With this win, NZ has taken a 1-0 lead in this 5 match T-20 Series. The next T20 is on Thursday at Dunedin. Let’s see if Australia can make a comeback.
