Have you noticed the Google Doodle Today? If you have, then you must have noticed basketball animation in Doodle. Actually, Google has dedicated this animation doodle to honour the inventor of Basketball game, James Naismith who invented this game 130 years ago!!H Naismith was a Canadian-American physical educator, who actually invented an “athletic distraction” to keep the students occupied during winter. That “Athletic Distraction” was the game of Basketball which eventually went on to become one of the most popular sports in the world.
“Athletic Distraction” was actually the game of Basketball
Naismith invented the game of basketball during his life as an educator at the YMCA. Actually, he was struggling with a rowdy class where students were limited to play indoor games only in the English winter season. Naismith was given the task of creating a indoor game that would provide “Athletic Distraction” to the students and help them to maintain their physical activity. At that time, soccer, rugby etc were most popular games. Naismith reached to the conclusion that a big and soft soccer ball would be most safe. Secondly, to make it less rough from soccer and rugby, he decided that passing would be the only legal option instead of tackling. And lastly, to ensure less body contact among players, he decided to lift the goal at a decent height and that’s how the game of Basketball originated. The first such basketball game was played in the year 1891 and in less than 14 years, the game showed its participation in 1904 Olympics. And Today Basketball is played by more than 300 million people across the globe.
Naismith discovered Basketball Game during his time at YMCA
Born and raised on a farm near Ontario on November 6, 1861, Naismith was a talented and versatile athlete. Before moving to the US, he studied and taught physical education at McGill University of Montreal. He represented the University in various sports such as football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and gymnastics. He earned the pride for being the first McGill Director of athletics. However, he left the Montreal and started his career as education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Massachusetts. In an attempt to acknowledge his contribution by the invention of basketball game, The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts was named in his honour. In July, 2019, he was inducted into Toronto’s Walk of Fame. The world will never forget James Naismith!!
